Golf team hitting stride
When Coach John Guerrero and the Mesa men’s golf team hit the links in the Thunderbird Golf Invitational April 18-19, expectations will be high.
Mesa, currently third in the conference and second in the region, entered this season as defending regional champions.
When asked what his expectations were for the Thunderbird Invitational and regional championship, coach Guerrero said, “We expect to win our own tourney. We don’t want anyone to beat us at home. We need this momentum as we defend our region championship.”
The regional championship is held at the Rio Rico Golf Resort on April 27-29.
The team’s success this season is in large part to sophomore veteran Brent Hook, who is currently third in the conference with an average score of 70.5.
“Brent is the X-factor to this team. He will lead us into the regional tournament,” said Guerrero of his team’s leader.
The team is also anchored by freshman Marcus Williams, who is currently eigth in the region with an average score of 72.1.
If the Thunderbirds finish first or second at the regional tournament, they will earn a bid to the national tournament in Scottsboro, Ala.,, May 20-25. The team finished sixth in the nation last year.
Come seasons end, the young Thunderbird team will lose a lot of key players, but Coach Guerrero has high hopes for next season as well.
“We are bringing in possibly the best recruiting class I have ever had next year. Some of the top players in the nation are coming.”
Guerrero has been named Golf Coach of the Year the past for seasons by Arizona Community College Athletic Association
The Thunderbird Invitational will be held at the Long Bow Golf Club off Higley Road in North Mesa. The invite is free to spectators.
