Gaucho bats too much for T-birds
The Mesa baseball team encountered a setback in their road to the playoffs April 10, as they dropped an afternoon game to Glendale Community College by a score of 12-5.
Mesa pitching gave up 22 hits in 43 at bats to the Gauchos of GCC.
The loss tightens the race for second place in Division II of the ACCAC.
Currently MCC holds on to the second place spot in the division with Gateway Community College closing in on the Thunderbirds.
As of April 11, the Thunderbirds hold a 9-16 ACCAC record while Gateway has a record of 8-18 in conference play.
Glendale Community College (7-19) and Phoenix College (6-18) are also in the hunt for the second place position.
Scottsdale Community College has all but locked up first place in Division II, as they are the only team in the division with a winning record at 15-9.
In ACCAC’s Division II only the top two teams make it to the playoffs. Those two teams then play a best of three playoff with the winner advancing to the district championship game for a chance to play in the Junior College World Series.
This year’s series will be held in Millington, TN, May 26-June 1.
The Thunderbirds have made it to the World Series the past three seasons. Last year’s team finished with a record of 44-21.
The Thunderbirds recently finished a home and home series with the Scottsdale Artichokes on April 3 and 4.
The T-birds put up some impressive offense in a 6-3 victory in the teams’ first game. The following day, though, MCC came up on the short end of a 3-1 loss. The two teams are scheduled to meet again April 20 and 21, then again on April 28.
The Thunderbirds have split their season series with Gateway so far. Mesa lost a tough 3-2 game at Gateway on March 30, but followed it up with an impressive 4-0 shutout on March 31. The two teams meet for a crucial series April 17 and 18. The home game in that series will be April 18 and will begin at 3 p.m.
Kyle Nyhart is sixth in ACCAC this season in RBIs with 34.
Connor Lewis is third in the ACCAC with an ERA of 1.29.
