Powell’s Thunderbirds reach elusive perfection
According to women’s head tennis coach Pinny Powell, her team had never been undefeated in her 32 years of coaching. That all changed April 10, though, as her team beat Eastern Arizona to finish the regular season a perfect 16-0.
Last year was a rare losing season for Powell and her Thunderbirds, but her team has bounced back strong this year winning many of their games in dominating fashion.
The play of Lynley Wasson has been well chronicled this season. The Thunderbird standout has lost only two games in conference matches all season and she has not lost a set.
At one point in the season the Thunderbirds rattled off four cosecutive 9-0 shutouts against Paradise Valley, Gateway, Glendale, and Scottsdale.
Regional playoffs begin April 18 for the Thunderbirds with the top three finishers making it to the national tournament.
Powell said her team should have no problem making it to nationals.
The NJCAA Divison I Women’s National Tournament will take place May 5-11 at the Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson.
