MCC Professor writes nature guide to help understand wildlife

Want to take a hike out by the Superstitions but worried about rattlesnakes? No problem. Arizona Game and Fish Department just issued a new book called “A Field Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles in Arizona,” co-authored by one of MCC’s own biology professors, Dr. Andrew Holycross.

The book contains facts on all 141 species of Arizona reptiles and amphibians, including all 13 rattlesnakes found in Arizona. Also included is a detailed map of the range where various species live. Dr. Holycross explains the field guide “covers everything from what to do if you’re bit by a rattlesnake, to what steps to take if your pet has been poisoned by toad toxins. If you want to know anything about the basic biology of Arizona’s turtles, salamanders, frogs, toads, lizards and snakes, you’ll find it in the new field guide. This is the first comprehensive guide to Arizona’s native and introduced reptiles and amphibian species.”

The field guide is a good tool for both frequent wildlife watchers as well as those who encounter snakes and lizards outside every once on a while.

The new guide is $12 with 150 pages full of color photos and tips for identifying wildlife and can be found at any Arizona Game and Fish Department office or by going to the department’s website at azgfd.gov/publications. Pick up a copy today and explore what Arizona has to offer.
