Issue of guns on campus creates employee hot topic
A forum and discussion on college safety issues was held on Sept. 12 at the Rio Salado Conference room in Tempe.
The Governing Board Forum discussed questions and issues concerning College Safety. Scott Crowley, board president, informed the attendees of a handout of the Law Enforcement/Safety Officer Program Review from the Maricopa Community Colleges.
Donna Schober facilitated the forum and encouraged all audience members and representatives to speak to the forum.
Representatives from Maricopa County Colleges from Mesa, Scottsdale, Estrella, Scottsdale and Chandler-Gilbert were present to propose their thoughts and feelings regarding college safety issues.
The major topic brought up by those who spoke in front of the board was whether or not college safety should carry guns. The meeting was a continuation of a Governing Board Retreat.
“My support for centralized structure is pretty well known,” said Steve Corich, head of MCC security. “Look at ASU, Pima, no further. They have the best practices. Let’s put our own spin on these practices,” Corich added.
Barry Vaughan also addressed his thoughts and feelings on the issue. “I have the highest respect for security, but I think we are struggling with the question,” said Vaughan.
Vaughan also brought up the issue of individuality for security measures. “Each colelge is unique, and requires a different level at different colleges.”
Janice Riley from MCC also made her thoughts known. “We do not want to be centralized. We don’t need a local agency,” expressed Riley.
Aside from faculty and staff members from the colleges, concerned citizens were also present and expressed their opinions to the governing board.
“I am a former law enforcement officer. I have a 17-year-old daughter. It appalls me that the safety officers on campus are not carrying weapons,” said Michael Duran. Duran added that he is concerned for his daughter and other students safety at community colleges.
In closing statements from Crowley, the governing board will review again before a decision is made.
