“I had finished reading your September 12 issue of the Legend and I was pretty distressed to read the night on the town article and in the ‘Cost of the average night out,’ the tip on a $35 check was listed as $4, which is barely over 10 percent. Being a student and a waitress, this printing is very damaging. It should be made known that anything under 18 percent of the check total is faux-pas for a tip…We also have to share our tips with the bartenders, the busers and a lot of the times, other staff members known as food runners. And we have to claim 10 percent of our tips and some nights, you know, legally, for the IRS, some nights we claim we made more money than we made because of people leaving less then 18 or 15 percent, like $4 on a $35 check… Serving is a hard and tedious job, but it is a student friendly job. Articles like this keep the public ignorant and makes our job that much harder...”
