Spotlight:

Construction plans under way at MCC

The first phase of a plan to update existing facilities and construct new buildings is finally going under way around MCC campuses.

Based on two years of focused planning and community input, the building projects will help MCC to better meet rapid-growing educational needs of the community. Funds for the new projects are provided by the approved 2004 initiative bond.

Immediate projects getting started at the Southern and Dobson campus include:
▪ Developing additional parking on the east side of capmus, to be completed in December 2006.
▪ Upgrading the heating and cooling systems to improve energy efficiency.
▪ Installing additional security cameras and new computerized key systems to enhance security.

Other construction projects include:
▪ Identifying types of classroom space needed for Communications and Humanities educational initiatives. Planning will continue through Fall 2006.
▪ Breaking ground for a new Physical Science building at the Southern and Dobson campus. Anticipated date is January 2007.
▪ Remodeling existing Physical Science building at the Southern and Dobson campus into the Health and Wellness building. Anticipated date is March 2008.
▪ Beginning construction at the Red Mountain cam pus for additional classroom space. Anticipated date is April 2008.
▪ Breaking ground for a new Performing and Fine Arts builing at the Southern and Dobson campus.
Anticipated date is April 2010.

Distance Learning Expansion:
▪ Purchase new computer hardware to support new systems that will expand and MCC’s distance learning program. MCC will also be seeking accredition to offer online degrees.

In the MEChA article on Page 15, the length of Arizona’s southern border with Mexico was misstated. It is 389 miles long.

Incident Log

Sept. 25 at 3:20 p.m. - A campus police officer responded to the book store regarding a subject that had just stolen three math text books from the store. The officer was able to develop identifying information on the suspect after it was learned that he had sold the books to the Textbook Company across from the college. Investigation also showed that this same suspect had been involved in a theft of several books from ASU’s bookstore on Sept. 23.

Sept. 26 at 12:06 p.m. - College Safety received information that the suspect from the Sept. 25 book theft had just attempted to sell additional books at the Textbook Company that had been stolen a few hours earlier from the Scottsdale Community College book store. A campus police officer contacted this subject as he exited the MCC book store with two addition stolen books and placed him under arrest. Investigation revealed that the suspect had just been released from Arizona State Prison two weeks ago. ASU Police and Mesa Police detectives assumed jurisdiction in this investigation and the suspect was booked on numerous felony charges.

Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. - A student reported that his bicycle was stolen from a bike rack near the east side of the gymnasium and parking lot C. A review of store CCTV video revealed that the bicycle was stolen by an unidentified male. Investigation continued.

Sept. 27 at 12:19 p.m. - Two students were involved in a minor non-injury motor vehicle accident in lot C, near the stadium. Relevant information was exchanged between the drivers.

Sept. 27 - A student reported possible endangerment in the parking lot at Red Mountain that occurred a few days earlier when another student recklessly drove a motor vehicle toward the victim. A review of stored video revealed that the endangerment did not occur as reported and no further action was taken.

Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. - Two students were involved in a minor non-injury motor vehicle accident at Red Mountain. Relevant information was exchanged between the drivers.

Sept. 27 at 7:05 p.m. - A student reported the theft of his 2001 gold Saturn from lot C. The victim possibly left his keys inside the unsecured vehicle. The victim reported the theft to Mesa Police Department.

Sept. 28 at 10:45 a.m. - A Public Safety officer investigated an altercation between two students resulting from a parking dispute in lot J, west of the SC building. No further action was taken.

Oct. 2 at 1:30 p.m. - A student reported that person(s) unknown pried the racing hoof ornament off of his 2004 Dodge while the car was parked in lot I, southwest of Child Care.

Oct. 3 at 5:05 p.m. - A student reported minor damage to his vehicle that might have occurred off campus. There is no suspect information.
