Career expo attracts hopeful job seekers

The Mesa Community College Fall Job Expo on Wednesday, Oct. 4 was intended to highlight immediate openings that students could apply for on the spot. Seasonal employment for the upcoming holiday season also was offered from some companies.
Underneath white tents four rows of tables were set up to display company signs, fliers, pens and anything else that the employers wanted to hand out. A total of 89 companies attended the expo.
The Arizona Republic, Bank of America, Clear Channel Radio of Phoenix, Chandler Unified School District, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mesa Fire Department were some of the companies that attended. Representatives had tables set up with informational packets and were available to answer questions about interviewing and job opportunities.
Sharona Lander, a student at Mesa Community College, was there to look for a job.
“I think that the job expo is a great idea to help students with their job search,” Lander said.“There were about 100 job seekers that attended the expo,” said Debby Smith of Career Re-entry Services.
Smith also considered this job expo a success compared to past expos. “More students and employers this year,” Smith said.
Students also seemed to be more prepared than past ones. The employers also said they were more impressed. This year the Career Services Center passed out fliers and set up posters to advertise the expo and to get the word out.
“I think this event is good because it gives students resources and more information on companies. That’s why I’m here,” said MCC student Nick Sanchez. Sanchez also said that he had the chance to talk to some of the employers.
“This kind of thing is cool for looking for job opportunities,” said Jessica Mendivil, an MCC student.
According to Smith, a couple of students reported that they got hired on the spot and some received interviews after the expo.
“It’s hard to track who gets interviews and how many students get job offers. The only way for us to know is if they come back to the Career Center and tell us,” Smith said.
The next Career Expo that Mesa Community College will host will be Feb. 28.
Tips for finding the ideal job:
Network: Most people find jobs through word-of-mouth. Talk to colleagues, acquaintances, relatives, friends, professors, and former co-workers. Ask their advice; seek out introductions to people in the field that of interest.
Personal Skills: Work on communicating skills effectively. Employers need to be able to lay out potential employees skills, and explain how they relate to the job they are seeking.
Organize and prioritize: Make a list to help keep track of job search efforts. Preparing a list also helps organize priorities and keeps goals in focus.
Dress for success: How to tie a tieStep 1:
Start with the wide end of the tie on your right side and extend below the narrow end a few inches. Cross the wide end over the narrow and then back underneath.Step 2:
Continue around, and pass the wide end across the front of the narrow end once more.Step 3:
Pass the wide end up through the loop.Step 4:
Hold the front knot loose with index finger. Then pass wide end down through loop in the front.Step 5:
Remove finger and tighten knot. Draw up tie to the collar holding the narrow end. Ta-da! A finished product!
