Soccer team on a roll
There is a certain mark that goes along with being the leading team in a conference. The Mesa Lady Thunderbirds are beginning to feel that mark on their chests as they continue their march through the ACCAC season.
As of Oct. 17, MCC remained atop of the ACCAC with a record of 12 wins, 1 loss, and two ties.
Games have become tougher as the season has progressed for the Thunderbirds as teams have focused their efforts on stopping MCC’s potent scoring attack led by Krista Mirabelli, Andrea Evans and a host of other talented other players.
Last week, the Thunderbirds faced off against a Pima Aztec team who they had beat soundly in the first matchup, winning 4-1.
In this game though, the Lady Aztecs were determined to play better defense.
After being scored on frequently in the the teams first meeting, Pima held the MCC women to just one goal.Fortunately for the Thunderbirds, their defense continued to play well, as did standout goalkeep Monique Wells, who held the Aztecs to just one goal, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
On Oct. 11, the Thunderbirds hosted the Glendale Lady Gauchos. In the first matchup between the two team the Thunderbirds won in a rout 5-0.
This time around the though, the story was defense.
As in their previous game, the scoring machine that has been the Thunderbirds thus far was held to just one goal.
Fortunately for the Thunderbirds the defense, and Wells were again solid, producing a shutout and a 1-0 win.
On Oct. 21, MCC played the Paradise Valley Pumas in a battle for top spot in the ACCAC.
