Tips to survive Christmas shopping
Every year Christmas rolls around with cookies, presents, music and of course, shopping! This year was no exception. Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall was full of anxious shoppers on ‘Black Friday,’ one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
Tracy Clark, associate director at ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business, explained Arizona’s current economy situation.
“Arizona’s economy is currently growing at a 6 percentage rate which means more jobs, more security and therefore a big shopping season this year,” Clark said.
Although Arizona’s economy is growing at a steady rate, that doesn’t mean one should go spending their money like water this holiday season.Clark gives some tips on how to be a better, happier shopper this season so one’s bank account won’t be in the red by the new year.
• One of the biggest tips is if one does not have the income, then don’t overdo the spending.
“More and more people are going into debt thinking it’s something everyone does but it’s a serious problem that follows people through life.”
• Try not to wait until the last minute for the better price.
“Most of the time it’s just not worth the effort to wait for that extra 5 cents off.”
• Be flexible.
“There are many other shoppers out there trying to make others (peoples) Christmas as well.”
• Buy giftcards.
“Giftcards are increasing in popularity because it’s easier for the shopper not having to worry about size, color or style preferred by the gift receiver.”
• The best way to go about spending money is to go to the ATM before each purchase. That way one can see their balance consisently.
“The best way to describe spending moneys is with peanuts. Peanuts without a shell are easier to eat therefore, cash or credit cards on hand are easier to use and exploit.”
• Create a shopping list before venturing out to the mall.
“Having a list helps one stay on track and focused so they don’t overspend on things not needed or wanted.”
Other useful tips for a smooth shopping season is to be patient, wear comfortable shoes to avoid sore feet, go with a shopping buddy to help prevent overspending, and have a positive attitude to stay happy throughout the day.
By following these simple shopping pointers, this holiday shopping season should be a breeze.
