Tennis team optimistic, new blood on the court

The Women’s Tennis team has served up some new additions and veteran experience that will help them ace the competition.

The Thunderbirds experienced their first losing season last spring in Coach Penny Powell’s thirty-three years as the Women’s Tennis coach. Powell said, “They all played hard and improved over last season.”

This year is a different story. Powell said, “I am very optimistic and excited about this spring, we are setting our sights pretty high.” Scottsdale Community College’s powerhouse, Pima Community College and Glendale Community College are going to test the team’s resilience.

Powell said, “We should win our conference and region.”

The biggest addition to the team’s lineup was transfer Lynley Wasson.

Wasson transferred from the University of North Texas and has had great success in the valley. As a graduate of Tempe’s Corona del Sol, she rallied her way to three consecutive 5A state championships.

“Lynley has been a huge addition. I am thrilled to have her,” Powell said.

Wasson has the experience to be very competitive this spring. Powell said, “Nationals are not an unrealistic goal. She is solid. I would not count her out.”

Sophomores Brittany Guerrero, Bianca Tucker, and Colleen Sullivan are all top returning players that have dominated the top of the lineup in the past. They bring their veteran rackets to the courts.

“It is a luxury to have this much depth. The freshmen are going to be fighting for their spots,” Powell said.

With new promising players and a core experienced veterans, the Lady Thunderbirds will likely be a force to be reckoned with this upcoming season.
