Expectations high for spring sports teams
After an exciting fall sports season, which included the Mesa women’s soccer team making it to the National Championship tournament, there is plenty of action to look forward to during the upcoming spring sports season.
In her first year as head coach, Kori Stephenson has her Lady Thunderbirds looking tough as they are near the top of the ACCAC. Stephenson’s crew has started with a 5-1 league record out of the gate.
Under head coach, former NBA player Alton Lister, the Mesa men’s basketball team has a lot to look forward this season. The season is already well under way and transfer Adam McCoy is among the leauge leaders in scoring at nearly 24 points per game.
Last year, the Mesa men’s golf team stormed out of the gates and finished first in a handful of tournaments. This season, Thunderbird returners Brandon Sundquist and Brent Hook, both of whom are ranked in the top 20 in the NJCAA, look to lead the team to a high finsish in the country.
The Mesa women’s golf went through a tough season last year as they suffered through injuries. This season, returners Kendra Gregory and Meghan Steffey look to lead the Lady T-birds back to the top.
On the diamond, baseball coach Tony Cirelli has a young group of players coming in, who will look to improve on last year’s 39-17 record.
A strong pitching staff, including hard-throwing Matt Van Den Heuvel, should give the Thunderbirds a good shot to make a deep run into the postseason.
Last year’s women’s softball team, under the tutelage of head coach DeWight Byron, was an impressive 42-19-1. The team will look to futher improve on last year’s accomplishments with catcher Natalie Bejarano and returning outfielder Stephanie Bisgard leading the way.
The track and field season looks to be a thrilling one this year. Rashaad Scott, coming of an incredible freshman season where he broke several school records, will look to lead the Thunderbirds to a region title. Coach Steve Jacobs also has a solid core of sprinters returning that will make Mesa a force to be reckoned with.
