Early preparation key to transferring successfully

Students at community colleges take core classes knowing they are cheaper and can transfer over to the major universities. Many students can already get all their general studies done.
But what happens if those core classes don’t end up transferring over?

Many students can feel cheated out of their money and time because once they enter a program at the university they have to pay for the same classes that they have already taken.

Science and pre-med classes happen to be the most popular classes that don’t end up transfer over.

Most universities don’t transfer such classes over because it makes students take classes at their programs and of course, spend money on the class and books.

Maxine Proctor, the Director of Pre-Health Programs, said “all do pre-med classes transfer over to ASU from all the Maricopa Community Colleges. The classes that don’t transfer over are the fundamental sciences. Students should take the general sciences and those should transfer over just fine.”

Proctor suggests taking the a balance of classes while attending a community college so once a student transfers over, they are not taking their major’s rigorous courses only.

Transfer classes can seem like a real hassle once it’s time to apply to a university but there are people who are willing to help students under the system and transfer process.

MCC advisors also recommend coming in and making an appointment. They have major checklists readily available and will answer any questions a student has.

The Arizona Course Applicability System has website which helps students find out how classes transfer over and work for various university programs.

The Arizona Course Applicability System recommends checking University Transfer Guides which provide information for Arizona community college students about the courses they can take at the community college that will transfer over and satisfy degree requirements at any of the Arizona universities.

If there’s a second language requirement, they also recommend knowing the minimum G.P.A. for the program, and other program requirements such as SAT or ACT scores.

The Arizona Course Applicability System even allows students to create a personalized transfer planning guide online.

Students can access the Arizona Course Applicability System by going to http://www.az.transfer.org/cas/students/index.html.

MCC advisors can be contacted by either a walk-in appointment or by calling (480) 461-7222 and making an appointment.
