MCC track stars off to Division I homes
It is off to the Bluegrass State for Mesa track and field star Rashaud Scott. The 21 year-old, who is becoming a walking record book at MCC, has accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Kentucky.
Scott will be coached by Doug Reynolds, a former MCC thrower. Last season Scott broke Reynolds’ ten year-old discus record, one coach Selmer Olsen said he thought would never be broken.
As well as breaking school records and being one of the top freshman discus throwers in the country last year, Scott was also invited to be a member of the U.S. National Track and Field team this summer and competed in the North American-Central American-Caribbean Under 23 Championships in the Dominican Republic.
Scott performed very well at the games bringing back the silver medal.
Scott though will not be the only Thunderbird heading off to a Division I school next season. MCC’s Michelle Amete is set to sign her letter to play for the Sun Devils of Arizona State University.
Amete has already set five school records at MCC and also holds a junior college national record in the hammer throw with a toss of 189 feet.
Amete, who competed in the 2005 Pan American Track and Field Games, was a state champion in the shotput and discus at Queen Creek High School.
Scott and Amete are just another two in a long line of great throwers who have been mentored by coach Selmer Olsen at MCC. In the past three years, Olsen has produced 12 national champions.
