Fashion career day showcases recycled outfits

Students from New School for the Arts, McClintock High School, Peoria High School and Mesa Community College showed off their fashion talents at the MCC fashion show Wednesday, April 25, as a part of the fashion design and retail marketing career day event.
The fashion show showcased student designers, from high school and college as well teacher designers and local designers.
Students were able to show off their abilities and bring awareness to the MCC fashion department and the Fashion Focus club.
Along with the fashion show there was a silent auction and vendors from local stores set up looking for new applicants to employ.
The main thesis for the show was “recycled fashion,” and “wearable art,” taking old clothes and making them new.
Some students turned household items into clothing, including: a few dresses made out of garbage bags, table cloths, shower curtains and even old pool toys.
As for the wearable art, MCC students showcased a t-shirt made of candy wrappers, a shirt and skirt combo made of bubble wrap and a dress made of Bud Light cans.
Sarah Schrader, a member of the MCC fashion program, designed and made the Bud Light can dress for the show and said the shows are “always hectic.”
Students from New School for the Arts, a creative arts high school in Tempe, showed off their individual skills by showcasing more than one outfit.
Students for NSA designed their clothes based on themes they personally picked out, showing off mostly dresses, but skirts and shirts as well.
Another participant of the MCC fashion show, Angela Johnson, designed a shirt and skirt combo for this semesters fashion show.
Johnson, who also participated in last semesters fashion show said that she can now see herself “totally improving” from last semester.
