Lack of candidates forces ASMCC to appoint officers

After only 22 votes were cast at the Southern and Dobson campus and 21 from Red Mountain for student government elections, the Associated Students of Mesa Community College must now search for students to fill the remaining board positions.
Only one candidate, Betty Jo Lenhart, ran for student body president on April 13.
According to Lenhart, who is also the current vice president of ASMCC, fliers, posters and sandwich boards were posted two to three weeks before elections were held.
“We try to get the word out to students about events two, maybe three weeks ahead,” Lenhart said.
Others applied to run for student body president and the other executive positions, but their applications were rejected due to not meeting ASMCC’s criteria.
The remaining positions will be selected by a committee consisting of the ASMCC advisers. Other members of the committee are yet to be selected.
Students had the opportunity to seek office and turn in their application packets until April 27. There are 12 positions that need to be filled. ASMCC hopes to have all the positions filled by the end of May.
When asked about the lack of interest and the downward spiral of student participation, no one from ASMCC would comment.
Repeated attempts to contact advisers of student government went unanswered.
Annually, ASMCC is allotted $55,000, which comes from student tuition for student activities.
