Time, preparation vital to college transfer process

The end of the semester is near, which means the end of community college for some students planning on transferring to a four-year university. Whether to Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, or out-of-state universities, students are off to bigger things.
Preparing to transfer to a four-year college can be somewhat frustrating due to the deadlines. Stduents often wait last minute to turn in their applications or their transcripts.
MCC student Celeste Wyrick, a public relations major, said, “A lot of mental preparation has occurred in relation to transferring to ASU. I’ve had to take a considerable amount of time to really think about the things I would enjoy in a working environment. For me, I know I want to make a difference. I know that I would like to help others.” Wyrick also added she would like more personal time. “I know that I would want to be able to have time with my child instead of being in an office 40-plus hours a week all year.”
At the transfer services center, students can schedule an appointment with an advisor to adjust an individual education plan and to meet with a university representative.
Students are also encouraged to access the Course Equivalency Guide (CEG) or set up a Transfer Planning Guide using CAS.
MCC student Michael Thomét, who is majoring in English-Creative Writing, is planning to transfer to ASU in the Fall after receiving an Associates of Science.
“MCC offered plenty of courses that I could get out of the way while the price was low. Besides, I have already learned quite a bit here at MCC, and I have made many great contacts with teachers like Mark Gooding and Michael Cryer. I generally consider my time here at MCC to have been very beneficial,” said Thomét.
Whether MCC helped students gain extra credits to move on to a university or showed them the path or major they want to commit to, community college is a beneficial place to prepare students for the real world and to allow them to transfer to a university.
