Diamond teams gear up for postseason

The sun is beginning to set on the diamond at MCC but both the Thunderbird softball and baseball teams hope to play well into May.
The MCC softball team has been on a roll of late. As of April 22, the team has an overall record of 46-19 on the season.
The team will likely face off against familiar foe Phoenix College when the playoffs begin May 4.
The Lady T-birds are heading into the postseason on a high note having found their groove of late.
MCC went 4-2 during the week of April 16. The team won both games of a doubleheader against Scottsdale Community College and the split doubleheaders against Glendale and Arizona Western.
The Thunderbirds have played well in all facets of the game. Pitcher Theresa Tautimez leads the ACCAC with a record of 25-8, and has been instrumental in the Thunderbirds’ success this season.
On offense Jessica DeFrietas has continued her assualt on the league leaderboard. DeFrietas finds herself at the top of nearly every offensive category in the ACCAC.
Her .561 batting average is second in the ACCAC but she is first in home runs (21), stolen bases (56), hits (105), and runs scored (95).
Stephanie Bisgard has also been key to MCC offense as her .464 batting average is good enough for fourth in the ACCAC. Her 89 hits are second in the league.
The Mesa baseball team also has their eyes on postseason. As of April 23, the team is in second place in ACCAC Division II. There is no chance for the Thunderbirds to catch first place Scottsdale Community College. The Artichokes are currently nine games ahead of the Thunderbirds with only four games to go.
The team will likely lock up the second and last playoff spot in Division II which will match them up against first-place SCC in the regional playoffs.
The Thunderbirds have gone 9-5 in their last 14 games as they fight furiously to fend off Glendale who are two games behind the T-birds for the last playoff spot.
Outfielder Chris Caves leads the team with a .378 batting average. His five home runs are among the ACCAC leaders.
Dominic Gamboa has also been hitting well for the Thunderbirds. His seven triples are second in the ACCAC.
