Athletic department institutes mentorship program

In an effort to better the experience of the MCC student-athlete, the school’s athletic department has created a mentorship program with the goal of helping MCC student-athletes work towards a degree at MCC.
The program will consist of faculty volunteers who will help athletes at MCC with a variety of academic topics.
The mentors will be paired with various sports teams and will assist athletes on those teams.
Mentors will help athletes organize tutoring sessions so that they can find time to study during their hectic athletic schedules.
The mentors will also help athletes set up appointments with advisers in order to help them stay on track with their academic goals.
The program, which is slated to begin in the fall, will also help students identify academic resources such as testing and multicultural services. Mentors will also help students coordinate study tables so athletes can find time to help each other with their studies.
Acting athletic director John Mulhern said it is his hope that the program will expand to include academic preparation workshops.
“We want to be able to help our athletes fully develop,” Mulhern said. “It is important that they perform well not only on the field but on the classroom as well.”
Mulhern said that all the schools athletes will have access to mentoring.
“This program will be available to all of our athletes.”
