Cinco de Mayo

May 5 is a day of celebration and a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism all over the United States and Mexico.
France, along with England and Spain, occupied Mexico since mid-1861 as a result of President Benito Juarez’ suspension on foreign debt payment.
Eventually England and Spain withdrew but the French remained in an attempt to create an empire in Mexico.
The morning of Cinco de Mayo, 1862 marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla.
Cinco de Mayo is not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, which actually occurred 50 years earlier on September 16.
There are many festivities occurring all around the valley to commemorate “5 de Mayo.”
For instance, the El Pedregal Festival in Scottsdale offers tequila and salsa tasting as well as mariachi performances and a salsa challenge.
Phoenix will be shutting down Washington Street for a fiesta with authentic Mexican foods, activities, and live entertainment.
Valle Luna restaurants plan on heating things up with pinatas, karaoke, and hot pepper eating contests.
Even pooches get to party at Chandler Downtown Library, where for the 18th year they will host Chihuahua competitions and crowning of the king and queen Chihuahua.
What ever the festivity, Cinco de Mayo is sure to be a good time, and remember there is always Seis de Mayo to take a siesta.
