Server Maintenance — We still do that??

So, the other day I saw the mean Ogre in the swamp and he told me I couldn't do anything on the servers on Sunday because he had to do some "maintenance". Then I heard from the donkey the only thing the Ogre and his Fiona do is play games. Then I talked to the Lord Farquaad and he told me he only takes the servers down to mess with people trying to work.

....... Now in reality if this were only true the Server Administrators in ITS could sleep in on Sunday. The reason for the server maintenance window is to allow for patches and other maintenance that must be accomplished when users are logged off. The system cannot be accessed during this time. ITS takes every opportunity to complete the maintenance as quickly as possible and bring the services back online.

The small amount of pain caused by the routine maintenance is far better than what could happen if a server was compromised because this regular maintenance was not performed.

The services that are regularly affected are:

Web
MCC EMail
WebCT
Midas
Wireless login

Webboard - Webboard services
Calendar - Corporate Time calendaring services
TBird - File share services, printing services in offices (not labs)
FTP - File share services, Domain authentication services
McFAPS - File share services, Real Audio services
Fusion - Specialized Web services

FileMaker
