Every piece of computer
related program or hardware will eventually become obsolete.
And so it has come to pass with Collabra and the Roaming Profiles.
When we started using Collabra and Roaming Profiles in
Fall 1998 they were quite successful. They allowed users
to have access to their bookmarks from any computer. They
also allow the students and instructors a way to post assignments
for class.
We currently have less
than 3% of MCC staff using Roaming Profiles and only four courses
using the Collabra server. Since Netscape is no longer
around and Mozilla does not support Roaming Profiles, we must
concede that our Roaming Profiles and Collabra must be discontinued
to allow other technologies to be supported.
You may be asking what
is being done to help users who are still on Roaming Profiles or
Collabra to migrate to newer technologies and when are these services
going to be turned off? We will be turning off the both Collabra
and Roaming Profiles on August 16, 2004. In the meantime,
the Technology Support Services has been writing several FAQs to
help users setup Outlook, Mozilla, or Macintosh Mail. We
also have Webboard and WebCT to replace Collabra and the Center
for Teaching and Learning has classes on both of these programs.
