Using the Web to Teach On-Campus Classes

Psst……one of the best-kept secrets at MCC is the many ways in which  technology can be used in teaching on-campus classes.  Read below to find out what WebCT and Breeze Presentation Software  can do for you.

WebCTis the course management software  used at MCC for online classes.  It will allow you to help your on-campus students learn more while decreasing the amount of time you spend on the mundane parts of teaching. This, then frees you to focus on the more creative aspects of instruction.

*Do your students often ask “What’s my grade?” How about an online gradebook? You can use WebCT to post grades as soon you’ve finished grading an assignment/quiz/exam.  You can even use WebCT to post comments to individual student assignments.  Students can check their grades twenty-four hours a day from a password-protected site only they can see.

*Would you like to use WebCT's capabilities to get your students to read the chapter BEFORE you lecture on it?  You can require students to take an online quiz on assigned reading material before attending class.

*Do your students sometimes miss important class updates and information? How about posting online announcements? If there is a last minute change in plans for your class, it’s easy to get everybody informed via WebCT’s capabilities.

*Does your email box get clogged with class mail?  How about using WebCT’s internal mail just for your class? All class emails will be in one spot, separate from your general MCC email messages, and at much less risk for delivering the latest worm or virus to your computer.

*Ever want formative feedback during the semester? How about an anonymous survey of your students? WebCT makes this a snap.

*Do you want your students to reflect upon and discuss important topics but feel constrained by limited class time? How about creating an online discussion board? Using WebCT or WebBoard, your students can post any time they choose, see what their classmates have posted, and respond to classmates’ postings. Classmates' postings are available for viewing as long as you, the instructor, wish them to be.

Breeze Presentation software lets you make your class presentation notes available to your students for review at the time of their choosing. And all this at no cost to you! Sound to good to be true? Read on!

*Do students ask for your Powerpoint slides? How about putting them online and including your voice, with the material password-protected so only students enrolled in your classes have access to it? Using Breeze Presentation software and WebCT, this is easy to accomplish.

Where can you learn how to use these fantastic tools? The CTL offers workshops throughout the semester.  Click here to see the schedule of classes for spring, 2005:   http://ctl.mc.maricopa.edu/events/display.jsp

Register online for the session you wish to attend. If you want to follow up the workshop with one-on-one help, make an appointment with any of these CTL staff people:  Peg Johnson (johnson@mail.mc.maricopa.edu, phone 461-7703), Donna Gaudet (donna.gaudet@mcmail.maricopa.edu, phone 461-7929), or Melanie Kroening (mkroening@mail.mc.maricopa.edu, phone 461-7799).  Learn what technology can do to make your classes more effective and less time consuming for you.
