There have been some changes in the District's licensing for virus protection software. A new license for virus protection software was purchased from Symantec, Inc. for 'Norton AntiVirus' for Windows and Macintosh computers. The old software packages, 'McAfee Virus Scan' for Windows and 'Virex' for Macintosh, are still being allowed access to the virus file updates, but that may change without notice.
There are some new features in the Symantec software that allow Information Services (IT) to take a proactive approach in protecting MCC computers from the havoc caused by viruses. The major feature is a server that receives update files from Symantec and automatically updates the client computers throughout MCC, ensuring that each is kept equipped with the latest information on combating viruses. When viruses are located by the Symantec software, the files are cleaned when possible, and quarantined on the server when they can't be cleaned.
To speed introduction and installation of the Symantec software, it is being made available via network file servers and a CD-ROM for home users. Available on the Helpdesk webpages are step-by-step directions for removing the old virus protection software and installing Norton AntiVirus.
