Dumpster Dive

Friday November 13, 2009

Mesa Community College will be hosting the 4th Annual Dumpster Dive - a Campus Waste Awareness event.

Live demonstrations, media coverage, information tables, vendors, and youth participation, are just part of the fun we have planned to help inform students, surrounding primary schools, and our local community about the importance of waste diversion, limited landfill space, and other sustainability issues impacting our planet.

Past attendees and volunteers have reported that the event is a great way to give a hands-on approach to the huge waste problem our modern life-style creates on a daily basis. We can also use the data we generate to help determine and lower our campus carbon footprint.

The Dumpster Dive is an event powered by students, staff, and community volunteers. We will use lawn space to conduct an audit of campus waste that is collected over a 24-hour period. The reality of what we collect is a visual reflection of the data we will compile - the bigger picture of Recycling. Volunteers will separate, tally, and study the collected materials in an effort to understand MCC's everyday volume of waste and see how we can help divert it from our landfills.
