HOW TO GET A PASSPORT
It takes about six to seven weeks to obtain a passport. Please allow sufficient time.
IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A PASSPORT:
- Make sure your passport is valid for six months after the return date.
- Bring your passport to the first orientation session.
RENEW YOUR PASSPORT IF:
- You have an expired passport that was issued within the past 15 years.
- Your name has changed since your passport was issued and you have legal documentation.
OBTAINING A PASSPORT
APPLY FOR A PASSPORT IN PERSON IF:
- You are applying for a passport for the first time.
- Your previous passport was lost, stolen or damaged.
- Your previous passport has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago.
- Your name has changed since your passport was issued and you do not have legal documentation.
TO APPLY IN PERSON FOR A U.S. PASSPORT, YOU MUST:
- Submit a completed (but unsigned) Application for Passport, Form DS-11.
Do not sign the application until the Passport Acceptance Agent instructs you to do so.
- Submit proof of U.S. Citizenship.
You may prove U.S. citizenship with any one of the following:
- Previous U.S. passport
- Certified Birth Certificate
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
- Naturalization Certificate
- Certificate of Citizenship
(Note: the following are not proof of citizenship: Voter registration card, Military discharge papers)
- Present Proof of Identity. You may prove your identity with any one of the following:
- Previous U.S. passport
- Naturalization Certificate
- Certificate of Citizenship
- Current, Valid:
- Driver's license
- Government ID: city, state or federal
- Military ID: military and dependents
- Provide two passport photos. (Check the yellow pages under Passport for passport photo services near you.) Your photographs must be:
- 2 X 2 inches in size
- Between 1 and 1-3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head
- Identical
- Taken within the past 6 months, showing current appearance
- Color or black and white
- Full face, front view with a plain white or off-white background
- Taken in normal street attire
(Note: Do not wear a hat or headgear that obscures the hair or hairline. If you normally wear
prescription glasses, a hearing device, wig or similar articles, they should be worn for your picture.
Dark glasses or nonprescription glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable unless you need them
for medical reasons. A medical certificate may be required.)
- Provide a social security number.
- Pay the applicable fee.
