Tax Information
for International Student

The Internal Revenue Services (IRS), a U. S. Government Department, makes it mandatory that F-1 students file for income taxes even if you did not have a job or any income to report during the year. It is extremely important that you file your income tax papers before April 15.

The consequences of not filing for taxes can be severe for F-1 visa students. You can lose your benefit to transfer to another school, get a job on campus, apply for Employment Authorization to work off campus (through Optional Practical Training, OPT), apply for Immigrant visas such as H-1 visa and Green Card (permanent residency), and even risk deportation from the United States.

International Education gives a Tax Workshop around March each year for F-1 students. We will have a specialist from the IRS who will provide you with the necessary forms, help you complete them, and answer any questions.

Guidelines

Who needs to come to the Workshop?

1.

Anyone who was physically present in the United Stated any time during the previous year, whether you had an income or not. You must still fill out the required paperwork (Form 8843).
2.

Anyone who worked either on-campus or off-campus at any time during the previous year. Please bring your Form W-2 with you to the workshop to complete the required forms (Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ and Form 8843). If you have not received Form W-2, please contact your employer as soon as possible and ask them to send you a copy.
3.

Anyone who received scholarship money from any US source at any time during the previous year. Please bring your Form 1042-S with you to the workshop to complete the required forms (Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ and Form 8843). If you have not received Form 1042-S, please contact the scholarship source as soon as possible and ask them to send you a copy.
What Do I Need To Bring To The Workshop?
1.

Social Security Number (SSN) - If you do not have a SSN, please pick up the letter from our office required to apply for a SSN at Social Security Administration Office immediately. Please note that your 999 MCC Student ID Number is NOT your Social Security Number.
2. Form W-2 if you worked.
3. Form 1040-S if you received scholarship from US source.
Can I Do It By Myself?
1.

Yes. If you wish to attempt to complete the forms on your own, you can access them through the Internet at web address: http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/forms_pubs/formpub.html
