The maximum award is $4731 for the 2008-2009 academic year (Fall/Spring/Summer) (depending upon eligibility). The U.S. Department of Education's formula determines your eligibility. Pell Grant Awards are available for periods of nine or 12 months. If you choose to attend full time for a fall/ spring award cycle there is NO eligibility for the summer session. Unlike the loan, Pell does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor degree. Pell grants are usually the foundation of federal student aid, to which aid from other federal and nonfederal sources might be added.
