MAGIC OF MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOPS for Grades 1 through 12

MCC Music Department

Enjoy three fun-filled Musical Comedy/Movement Workshops for 1st through 12th graders. Each session will culminate in a Dazzling Broadway Musical performance! Classes will stress techniques in singing, dancing and acting. Each student, except for students in Workshop III, will be required to bring a recording device. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. MMT faculty strive to maintain a gender balance in each of the three workshops.

ROCK MUSIC CAMP for students Grades 6 through 9

MCC Music Department

The Rock Music Camp is an intensive one-week musical performance day camp for young people who are looking to learn or perfect their rock star skills. Each student is assigned a specific instrument for the duration of the camp: Keys, Drums, Guitar, Bass, or Vocal. Students will be placed with like-minded artists to form bands or create original music as a group. The Rock Stars will perform at the end of the week in a showcase for friends, family and fans. The Camp is for musicians and musicians-in-training of all skill levels. No musical experience is necessary.

MESA YOUTH ACTORS ACADEMY (MYAA) for students Grades 4 through 12

MCC Theatre Arts Department

The Mesa Youth Actors Academy’s goal is to invite young performers who are interested in acting to MCC during the summer, and learn more about the field of acting. MYAA classes contain both acting and production elements that focus on age appropriate creative drama. The classes include basic acting concepts, audition techniques, and back stage etiquette. Students will participate in a 15 minute production in MCC’s Studio Theatre (TH2) at the end of each session.

CREATIVE DRAMA for Grades K through 5

This is a great opportunity to develop your imagination. Children’s theatre is not necessarily about performance, but more about learning about life and exploring meaning through creative interactions. During this workshop, we will build puppets, learn simple movement, dance to music, and participate in a small theatre presentation for parents and family audience the last day of the workshop. Participants will delight in their own creations and will be excited to share their talents with their families at the end of these three weeks.

Learning with Computers

STUDIO 180° - MACHINIMA - where video production meets game technology for Grades 8 through 11

MCC Business Department

If you love playing video games and want to learn how to create your own game-based movies, then this camp is for you! Specialists in the technology field instruct teens on the techniques used in both digital video production and video game technology. Upon completion of the camp, students will have produced their own Machinima movies within a team environment. The Machinima art form is the convergence of filmmaking, animation and game development. The word Machinima (muh-sheen-eh-mah) comes from combining machine (computer) and cinema (video) and involves film making within a real-time, 3D virtual environment, often using 3D video-game technologies. The student-centered learning environment includes state-of-the-art hardware and software in a multimedia studio (named Studio 180°) and a computer lab. High-end computers, video equipment, and a chroma key green screen will be utilized to create the end products.

Pre-requisite: Experience playing various video games and basic computer operations.

With Alice, you will be able to create exciting, visually appealing, 3D animation stories, and interactive games. CAMP RUNWAY – Fashion Camp for Teens Grades 8 through 12

MCC Business Department

“Camp Runway” is designed to give teens insight into careers in the fashion industry. The Camp will include: what a fashion designer really needs to know; why Computer Aided Design (CAD) is a must for both designer and merchandiser; how to predict future trends like a wizard; how to style a fashion shoot, silk screen a scarf and make a pattern like a pro. The Camp is taught by industry professionals and will have teens sewing, illustrating the latest fashions, creating visual displays and testing textiles. The grand finale is a walk down the runway in the teen’s own creation and putting all their new found skills to use in their very own fashion show for friends and families. NOTE: Sessions I & II are different in content, so teens can sign up for both!

THE ORGANIC ANIMATION STUDIO for Grades 6 through 8

Do you love animated films like Coraline or Wallace and Gromit? Ever thought about making your own animations? The Organic Animation Studio at Mesa Community College is a hands-on learning environment for young people interested in exploring the amazing world of stop-motion animation. Students will learn a variety of creative techniques for constructing and drawing animated characters and scenes, and will utilize state-of-the-art equipment and computer software to create their own animated films. In Weather Camp, you will discover why there are seasons, how clouds form, what lightning is, how rainbows work, and more! You will even build a working weather station so you can forecast the weather and warn about dangerous Arizona conditions. Covered will be seasons, clouds, atmospheric optics (rainbows, etc.), winds, water cycle, water use, water safety, weather in Arizona: thunderstorms, lightning and floods. Students may even build their own weather station.

STORMCHASING for Grades 7 through 12

MCC Cultural Science Department

Stormchasing is an exploration of all types of severe weather: tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms and lightning, floods, and more. You will learn how these storms form so that you will know what to do during these deadly weather events. Those enrolled in Stormchasing II are eligible to be certified as official NWS Storm Spotters, working with the National Weather Service in Phoenix. Note to parents: This is an intense discussion of real weather dangers. Permission needed to view PG-13 movie: Twister.

MCC is offering the 2009 Future Leaders Academy for the Gifted to meet the needs of your bright, innovative, active son or daughter. The students will choose four interdisciplinary classes in the areas of science, language, social studies, math and technology that will target multiple intelligences, real-world experiences, discovery, innovation and problem solving. The students will have the opportunity to explore their own interests while developing their talents and skills. This academy’s primary focus is to foster the minds of our future leaders in a safe, exciting, learning environment where the students will have a great time engaging their minds and developing educational goals for their future. Students will sign up for four classes, a list will be sent home once registered. Students who will be entering Kindergarten will spend a week preparing for school in a fun, engaging, safe environment with teachers who have many years of experience working with the early learner. Kickstart will cover state standards in all subject areas through exciting, handson activities. Students will gain a firm grasp on letter recognition and phonemic sounds while acquiring the building blocks for reading. Comprehension strategies will be developed using award-winning children’s literature and the writing process will be introduced while looking at bugs. In the area of mathematics we will develop number sense and numerical operations while using computers, we will work on estimation, probability and measurement while preparing pizza and ice cream sundaes, and logic and problem solving will be incorporated in graphing and pattern activities that focus on animals, science discovery and geographic explorations. Students will leave this class with a packet of activities that will further their preparation for the school year and will help them be successful in Kindergarten.

KICKSTART 1st GRADE for students entering 1st Grade

Students who will be entering 1st Grade will spend a week preparing for school in a fun, engaging, safe environment with teachers who have many years of experience working with the early learner. We will culminate the week with a ‘100 Day’ where students will create their own word problems using addition and subtraction and instructors will use centers to expose the children to the building blocks of multiplication and algebra. Students will leave this class with a packet of activities that will further their preparation for the school year and will help them be successful in 1st Grade.

One of a Kind!

KID’S CULINARY CAMP for Grades 3 through 6

MCC Culinary Studies

Young chefs will learn safety and responsibility in the kitchen plus how to make a dinner for the family. Young chefs will also learn:

  • proper knife skills
  • appropriate oven use
  • use of different ingredients
  • how to measure ingredients
  • how to read package labels
  • how to read and comprehend recipes (they may even create their own recipe!)
  • the importance of presentation and flavor in food

Food themes for the three day culinary experience will include authentic Spanish dishes, Asian cuisine, classic French with a twist, pastries and baked goods including cake decorating and design, and frozen desserts and beverages. The young chefs will learn the importance of team efforts while cooking, cleaning and serving each other. On the final day of the three-day Camp, parents are invited to join their children for a lunch sampling of what their young chef has created. Enrollment is limited to 12 students.

“Finding the Leader Within” is a camp experience to help high school students gain skills to become efficient and effective school leaders. Through the use of interactive games, lively discussions and leadership exercises, students will develop leadership and life skills promoting their individual personal skills and assets. Included will be personality/leadership type and team building activities, effective communication skills for iPod leaders, leadership characteristics for the text message generation, Walking the Walk: “Putting Things in Motion” covering Parliamentary procedures, event planning and time management.

This workshop provides a wealth of activities using the six traits of writing and children’s literature that are flexible, creative, and even excite the most reluctant writer! The six writing traits improve written communication skills, which in turn, provide a solid foundation for writing throughout students’ lives. THUNDERBIRD SPORTS ACADEMY for Grades 3 through 8

Mesa Community College Athletics announces the 1st annual “Thunderbird” Sports Academy that is set for June 8th – 12th, 2009. The academy will feature a series of sports specific development programs coordinated and run by the professional coaching staff at MCC. The program is open to girls and boys entering grades 3-8 in Fall 2009 and will offer sessions of instruction in Football, Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Tennis, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball and Track. Each participant will spend two hours each day in the three sports of their choice. In addition, we will be offering a camp store, lunch bunch program and a guest speaker or performer each day.
