Women Writers:

Ms. Argersinger offers Nineteenth Century Women Writers each Fall Semester and Contemporary Women Writers each Spring Semester.

Both these courses are also offered as MILO courses-independent studies. Please see the MILO catalogue for further information or visit the MILO website.

Some of the writers and their works that we may consider in Nineteenth Century Women Writers include the following:

  • Mary Shelly Frankenstein The Modern Prometheus
  • Charlotte Bronte Jane Eyre
  • Emily Bronte Wuthering Heights
  • Louisa May Alcott Little Women
  • Charlotte Perkins Gilman The Yellow Wallpaper
  • Kate Chopin The Awakening
  • Willa Cather My Antonia and O Pioneers!

In Contemporary Women Writers, we may include Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, Mary McCarthy, Flannery O'Connor, Sylvia Plath, Judith Guest, Paule Marshall, Toni Morrison, Alice Munro, Margaret Walker, Barbara Kingsolver, Sandra Cisneros, Paula Gunn Allen, Leslie Marmon Silko Lorraine Hansberry, Lillian Hellman, Rita Dove and many others which may vary from semester to semester.

Students are welcome to make suggestions about additions to the readings. In the MILO courses, students design their reading lists individually.
