Journal Assignment Unit 2
Assignment:
From the assigned readings in this unit select at least threeessays and post a journal entry
for each (these will be entries 3, 4 and 5) to the WebBoard Forum.
I would strongly recommend at least one of your journals deal with Pojman's essay on the Realtivism/Objectivism
debate (but this is not required). It is an excellent essay, and I think it is very thought provoking.
Also, do not forget that you are required to respond to at least ten of your classmates' entries over
the course of the semester as well as post ten entries of your own! The forum is where we have our class discussion
and you should use it to "think out loud" with each other about what you are reading. Do you disagree with someone's
interpretation of the reading? What do you think they have overlooked, or why do you disagree?
Due Date:
- Entry 3: 2/17
- Entry 4: 2/24
- Entry 5: 3/3
Here are some sample questions you might consider as you think through your Journals for this unit:
- Why does Pojman reject moral relativism and do you agree or disagree with him?
- Why, according to Pojman, is moral relativism so popular?
- Do you think the moral relativism is as popular as it was prior to 9/11? If not, why not?
- What, according to Aristotle is the highest good, and how does it inform us about how we should live our lives?
- What, according to Aristotle, is virtue and how is it useful in achieving the good life?
- What is the heart of Hobbes' moral theory? Do you agree that all human action is motivated by self-interest? If so, do you agree with his prescription for social orgainization?
- According to Mill, morality rests on choosing to maximize the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Do you agree; why or why not? What are the practical implications of following Mill's Utilitarianism?
- What is the heart of Euthyphro's paradox? What is Socrates trying to get Euthyphro to understand? If God commanded you to murder an innocent child, would you do it; why or why not?
- Why, according to Kant, is reason a more appropriate guide for our will than happiness?
- What does the Categorical Imperative mean to you?
- What is the fundamental difference between Kant's theory and the Divine Command theory?
