Welcome to MAT082

Dear MAT082 students,

Welcome to MAT082 on the Internet offered through Mesa Community College . You are receiving this e-mail because of your enrollment in section #25219, 25221, 25223, Fall 2009 term.  My name is Fred Schineller (aka. Freddie), and I am your instructor for this course. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with some important information you will need to begin your coursework. I know you are anxious to begin, so let's get started!

The first place you should the Homepage for MAT082 (bookmark this page): http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/~freddie/Mat082/082Home.htm

My MCC homepage is:    http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/~freddie/index.html

Required materials - obtain in advance of the course start date, Monday, August 24, 2009.

  • Textbook
    • Basic Mathematics through Applications by Akst/Bragg 4th Edition.
    • MyMathLab Student Starter Kit which contains the Student Access Code (packaged with new books purchased through MCC bookstore if your book did not come with one of these, they can be purchased online at http://students.pearsoned.com/get-started.html )
    • Online Textbook Only: Some students choose to purchase only the access code online when they register for the class and use the online textbook. The online textbook is just an electronic copy of the textbook with some multimedia features added. Other students like to have the physical textbook available since it is easier to read and access.  This choice is up to you. The online access code can be purchased when you set up your course account. Just click the Purchase Online Access link when you begin your Course Compass Registration process (step 3 below). You will need a major credit card for this. Most of the book stores at or near MCC also sell the online access codes (sometimes cheaper than online through course compass)
  • Internet access
    • Off campus from your work, home, or other location.
    • On campus in the MCC library at Southern/Dobson or Red Mountain. Other MCC locations may not have the necessary plug-in installed. Please be sure to use Internet Explorer when using the on-campus computers (not Mozilla)
  • Valid email account that you check regularly
    • This should be an account that you maintain and check regularly. If you do not have an email account, you can get one through MCC. Accounts can be set up on the MCC homepage at http://www.mc.maricopa.edu .
  • Calculator
    • This does not need to be a graphing-type calculator, but you should have a calculator of some type. You will be allowed to use calculators on homework and tests, so it will help you to get one early and learn how to use it.

What to do once you have the materials above

  • Roll sleeves up, sharpen your pencil, get some scratch paper out……………….
  • Go to http://students.pearsoned.com and Register for your course. Note that this is different than the registration process you followed through MCC. This process sets up your access to the online part of the course. The following information will be required:
    • Textbook information: Basic Mathematics through Applications by Akst/Bragg.  4th edition
    • Student access card which contains a unique student access code. This card is either included in the MyMathLab Student Starter Kit or located in the inside front cover of the textbook.
    • Course ID for your course: schineller80038
    • A valid email address
  • Once you have completed the registration process, run the MyMathLab Installation Wizard. Use the textbook information above to select the textbook for our class. Once you select our textbook, a graphic of the cover page appears, so be sure you have selected the correct book.
  • Follow the installation wizard instructions for our textbook and be sure that each off-campus computer you plan to use this semester meets the requirements.
  • Once you have registered and entered the class, read the class announcements.  EMAIL me right away using the subject line given to you in the class announcements (this is  your first 10 point assignment) .

It is extremely important that you obtain your required materials and complete the online course registration process described above ASAP (before August 24).  We have a lot of material to cover and will be moving quickly from day one. Don't hesitate to contact me with questions, and good luck!
