Welcome to Online Math!! The Mathematics Department is dedicated to making sure you are ready for your online mathematics class. Despite their convenience, online mathematics courses are not for everyone. The following will help you assess your readiness for an online mathematics class.

Technological Readiness

The MCC Mathematics Department uses CourseCompass and MyMathLab for their online classes. This web based application has minimum technological requirements. They can be found at the CourseCompass site (http://info.coursecompass.com/website/support.html). MyMathLab's system requirements are can be found at the MyMathLab site (http://www.mymathlab.com/system.html). If you have a questions, contact technical support at 1-800-677-6337 or use their online support services. Finally, a general knowledge of the use of personal computers, the internet, and installing software is also required.

Academic Readiness

As with any course, you must have the prerequisite math knowledge to be successful in an online mathematics class. If you are taking an online mathematics course because you think it will be "easier" than an on-site mathematics class, you will quickly discover you are incorrect. Online classes are at the same level of difficulty, if not more difficult due to the self-teaching and self-learning nature of the class, than its onsite counterpart.

Personal Requirements

Online students require a special kind of personality to be successful. The following websites detail some of these personal characteristics.

http://www.ion.illinois.edu/Resources/tutorials/pedagogy/StudentProfile.asp (Note: Successful students in MCC online mathematics classes will spend 10 to 15 hours per week on their classes).

There are many more sites, but these two sum them up. The key element in each of these is that you take responsibility for your learning.
