Modeling using Stat Menus

Problem:

Many companies in the United States manufacture or assemble their products abroad to save on labor costs. For example, the toy industry in the U. S. imports approximately 30% of its products from China, (GI Joe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are assembled in China.) The following table shows the dollar value of these imports during the period 1986 – 1990.

Year
Imports

(billions of dollars)

1986 0.237
1987 0.509
1988 0.765
1989 1.317
1990 1.547

Let's make an adjustment with the data.
Let x = 0 for the year 1986. So y = 4 for the year 1990
Let y represent the import values.

I. Choose Stat. Edit Menus
Put x–values in L1 and y–values in L2

II. Make a scatter Plot
Use 2nd Stat. Plot Menus
Select Plot 1 by pressing enter.
Turn Plot 1 on and make following selections:

III. Show Scatter Plot
Select Zoom Stat. (#9)
Should see scatter plot

IV. To find the Linear Regression Equation (See Below for Ti83)
Find the regression equation,by selecting the Stat. Calc. Menus.
Choose LinReg(ax+b) or (#5) and press enter. See

V. Copy Regression equation in y1 .
Press y = and move cursor to y1
Choose Vars Menus.
Select Statistics or #5
Choose Eq followed by RegEq #7. See

Select the Graph Menus. Should see the the following

TI83: Follow Step I– III above and Step V below.
V.. To find the Linear Regression Equation
Choose LinReg from Stat. Calc. Menus.
Enter function in y1 by choosing Vars, Y–Vars , Function. Select y1 or y2 etc.
See on screen, LinReg y1 or y2.
Press Enter. See coefficients of Linear Equation
To see Graph, Press graph.
