Finding the Minimum or Maximum Value of a Quadratic Function
Using the TI–85
Goal:
Find the Minimum Value of f (x)=x2 – 2x.
Graph f (x)=x2 – 2x in the Range Xmin = –4, Xmax = 4, Ymin = –6 and Ymax = 10.
Procedure:
Select More from the Graph menus followed by Math.
Select lower. Move cursor to the left of lowest point on graph.
Press Enter. See arrow top of screen.
Press Upper. Move cursor to the right of lowest point on graph.
Press Enter. See arrow top of screen on the right side of the other arrow.
Press More and find Fmin. Select Fmin. Move cursor to lowest point .
Press Enter. Should see x = 0.99999991219 and y = –1. Make sure the float is over the 0 or the 2nd 1. You can change the float by going to 2nd More (Mode).
The minimum value of f (x) is –1, the y–value.

Goal:
Find the Maximum Value of f (x)= –x2 – 2x.
Graph f (x) in the window Xmin = –4, Xmax = 4, Ymin = –6 and Ymax = 6.
Procedure:
Select More from the Graph menus followed by Math.
Select lower. Move cursor to the left of highest point on graph.
Press Enter. See arrow top of screen.
Press Upper. Move cursor to the right of highest point on graph.
Press Enter. See arrow top of screen on the right side of the other arrow.
Press More and find Fmax. Select Fmax. Move cursor to highest point.
Press Enter. Should see x = 0.9999988942 and y = 1.
The maximum value of f (x) is 1, the y-value.
