Course Description:

This course is the first in a two-semester sequence designed for students who wish to become elementary teachers.  The emphasis is partly on performance of the mathematical concepts taught in K – 8th, but mostly on understanding the theory behind elementary math (explaining WHY, not how), and then applying it in a service-learning experience. The main topics include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, fractions, decimals, and percents.
*Some assignments will require internet access and some assignment linkages have been created with Dr. Nora Reyes’ EDU 291 (Children’s Literature).

Course Prerequisites:

A grade of C or better is required from MAT 150/151, OR MAT 142, OR a satisfactory score on the placement exam. You must be prepared to show proof of your prerequisite(s).

**Good command of the English language is necessary to do well in this course. There will be a considerable amount writing and explaining in this course. I strongly suggest waiting another semester if your English skills need work. You WILL be graded on your ability to explain problems and their solutions. Spelling and grammar WILL be graded throughout this course – if you want to teach others, you must be prepared yourself, first.
