 Unit Five

***It Would Be to Your Advantage to Print This Unit

Before Beginning the Assignments***

In this unit, you will combine your essays in Units 3 and 4 to write a 1500-2000 word documented problem/solution paper. You will also add a last section about solutions that the experts have come up with to help the social issue in your second and third essays.

You will be writing the essay for this unit in third person (he, she, they, people, society, etc.); however, DO NOT use second person (you, your) at any time in your writings in this unit or in any of the other units unless it is in a direct quote.

NOTE: Any student papers of exceptional quality that are submitted to instructors in this course may be used as models in future classes. Students who have a strong preference that their papers NOT be used as models must indicate their preference to the instructor in an e-mailed message.

Attention Students:

The essay for this unit MUST be submitted by 6/29/09. No more than one essay may be submitted in any given week.

NOTE: Even though preliminary unit assignments are of low point value, they are essential in learning the techniques needed for successful completion of this course. Therefore, throughout this course, documented essays will NOT be accepted unless all unit assignments are submitted prior to the unit's essay.

 Assignment 12: 15 Points

Review, if necessary, the lecture on The Research Process.

Your last paper will be a 1500-2000 word problem/solution paper.

Click on this link for information on Transitions.

Begin looking for a minimum of three to five additional outside sources on solutions that the experts think will help your issue. (When you have finished this paper, you will have a minimum of 9 to 12 sources for your final paper.) Again, you will need to use different types of sources (books, journals, etc.) Do not use all Internet sources.

When you have found sources that you think you might use in the solutions section of this paper, review, if necessary, the lecture on Notetaking.

Begin taking notes for this section of your paper in the correct note-taking format. You will need to type your notes in your word processor and send them as an attachment when you turn in your final paper.

NOTE: Do NOT scan your notes into your word processor and send them as scanned material. Students in the past have done this, and they have come through as graphics, which take up too much space on the network.

Begin typing a Works Cited page for your essay using the information on pages 104 to 154 in A Pocket Style Manual, Fifth Edition by Diana Hacker for information on finding a thesis, organizing your evidence, and correctly formatting your works cited entries.

This works cited page should include your lists of works cited entries that were in your second and third essays.

Click on this link for an Example Outline Format for a Problem/Solution Paper.

Enter Microsoft Word (or your word processing program if you are working from home).

Begin a detailed outline for your paper.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  To receive full points for this assignment your thesis statement and outline for this paper must include the causes (or details) of the problem, the effects of the problem, and the solutions for the problem. You must follow the example outline format!!

Create a thesis statement for your paper.  This thesis statement should include describing the problem (from Unit 3), the effects of the problem (from Unit 4), and solutions from experts for the problem.

Review, if necessary, the lecture on Thesis Statements, Outlining, and Introductory Paragraphs.

Click on this link to read a Sample Outline for the Problem/Solution Paper.

NOTE: Remember that the essay for this unit must be in third person only unless in a direct quote.

Write an introductory paragraph for your essay. Be sure to include an attention-getter in your introduction to motivate your reader. This introduction should also include describing the problem (from Unit 3), the effects of the problem (from Unit 4), and solutions from experts for the problem.

NOTE: As you actually write your paper, you may change your thesis statement and introduction to better fit in your paper.

Save your outline, thesis statement, and introductory paragraph in one document.

Assignment 13: 200 Points

Begin writing the rough draft of the third section which you will combine with the papers in Units 3 and 4 to create your last paper.

Review, if necessary, the Grading Comments that your instructor may use when grading the final draft of your paper. By reviewing grading comments and MLA documentation comments, you may be able to avoid some common problems in your writing.  Also, be sure to correct any problems your instructor pointed out in the papers in Units 3 and 4.

After you have written the rough draft of your third section, review the Editing and Revising lecture, if necessary, for additional help in revising your rough draft.

You may either edit your own rough draft, or you may arrange with another student in the class to peer edit each other's essay. You can contact another student through the class bulletin board and arrange to send each other your rough drafts.

NOTE: Your essay needs to be 500 to 700 words in length. Use your word processor's statistics feature to check the length of your essay as you are writing it.

You will be writing this essay in third person (he, she, they, people, society, etc.); however, DO NOT use second person (you, your) at any time in your writings in this unit unless it is in a direct quote.

Review, if necessary, information about Writing in Third Person.

When you have received the peer review from a classmate or have self-edited your own third section, consider what needs to be revised. If you have a specific question or problem area in this part of your paper with which you feel you need additional help, contact your instructor.

If you are near the MCC campus, you may want to make an appointment with a Writing Center tutor who will go over your rough draft with you. The Writing Center's phone number is 480-461-7513.

Also, review, if necessary, the Grading Comments link to prior to editing your third section rough draft so you will be aware of what problems to look for in your rough draft.

NOTE: Editing and revising are vital steps in the writing process. Do not be satisfied with your first draft. No writing is perfect in rough draft form. There is always room for improvement.

Combine your second and third essays and this newly written third section to create a 1500-2000 word problem/solution paper.

Review, if necessary, pages 148 to 154 in A Pocket Style Manual, Fifth Edition by Diana Hacker for information on MLA manuscript format. Be sure that the final copy of your essay is formatted correctly.
