Argumentation

This is an overview of the parts that an argumentative paper should contain.

 Three to five sources listed on a Works Cited page and MLA parenthetical documentation required

Introduction:

  • Motivator
  • Transition
  • Thesis (sometimes referred to as Claim, Premis, Hypothesis)
  • ***Names subject, implies mode of development and side of issue paper will support.

Definition/explanation of the issue. Briefly define and/or explain causes or effects of the issue and their significance.

An acknowledgement and refutation of the opposing sides may be made here or at other points in the essay.

*Body paragraphs:

  • Topic sentence that states the topic/topics of the paragraph and implies an attitude towards it. Topic sentence should relate directly to the thesis (claim).
  • Supporting detail
  • Documented facts, statistics, studies, quotations, anecdotes, etc., to back up your supporting details.
  • Commentary to explain, analyze, interpret or show the significance of your support.
  • An acknowledgement and refutation of the opposing sides may be made in body paragraphs in the essay.
  • *Include as many body paragraphs as needed to present a thorough discussion of your subject and to support your thesis well.

Bring your paper to a smooth conclusion. You may summarize main points, make a call to action, or make a statement of conviction.

Include a bibliography (works cited) page as the last page of your paper. Title is Works Cited.
