Community Service Journal Entry
In this journal entry,
you will write 400 words or more about a time when you either volunteered or
were volunteered by someone else to do some type of community service. If you
can not remember doing community service yourself, perhaps you knew someone
else who was involved in it somehow.
See the example below
of one writer's experience with community service.
Getting Involved
When my children were babies, I didn't think much about doing any kind of community service. After all, I was extremely busy being the best "mom" I could. Even as they grew older, I was still very involved in doing things for them. However, I began to realize that I could do a lot more for them by involving myself in some kind of activity outside our home. I was fortunate enough that I did not have to work, so I did have time to participate in other activities.
I was an overly protective mother so I didn’t want to volunteer for something that would take me very far away from my children even when they were in school. So, I decided to volunteer at the elementary school that my children attended, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences that I have ever had and one that had a big influence on my life. I remember being very nervous the first day I was a helper in a classroom, but as time went on, I became involved in what I was doing and found myself thoroughly enjoying working with the children on an academic basis. The teachers at the school really seemed to appreciate my help. On the first day I volunteered, I realized how much work teachers have to do. I don’t know how they do it without help. I wasn’t sure how my children would react to having Mom at their school. Three of my four children were at the school at the same time. However, they thought it was fun for me to be there, and it gave me a great opportunity to get to know their teachers and what they were doing in the classroom. If any one of my children was having problems with some area of schoolwork, I was able to find out about it immediately and help my child to overcome the problem.
I spent so much time helping out at the elementary school that the principal
there began to strongly encourage me to go back to college and get my teaching
degree. I am very happy to say that I listened to him because my volunteering
experience was so rewarding. It greatly influenced my decision to return to
school and to become a teacher. This has been one of my biggest successes in
life.
Good luck and have
fun with your Community Service journal entry.
