Family Customs Journal Entry

This journal entry will be 400 words or more written about a particular family custom that had a significance on your life. If you can not remember a custom that was practiced in your own family, perhaps you participated in or observed a custom in someone else's family that made an impact on you. See the example below of one family's custom that was significant to the writer.

Christmas Morning

When I was a child, my family had many holiday customs. The Easter bunny always left my brother and me Easter baskets to be opened and enjoyed on Easter morning. On Halloween, we always dressed up in costumes and went trick or treating. There was always the huge turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. And of course, Valentine’s Day was always for giving Valentine cards to schoolmates and friends.

However, I think Christmas was always the most important holiday for me. As soon as I was old enough to understand that there was a Santa Claus who would leave me toys under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve, I would anxiously await for that morning to come. My mother was a nurse in a hospital, and my father delivered the U. S. mail. Therefore, there were many Christmas days when either one or both of them would have to work all day. When this was the case, my brother and I would still have to go to bed early on Christmas Eve so Santa Claus could come and leave us our toys. We would be so excited, I don’t know how we were able to go to sleep, and I am sure that my parents got very little sleep that night. Then, my mother and father would wake us up about 3:00 in the morning so we could have Christmas together before they had to go to work. Even though one or both of my parents might have had to work on Christmas day, it was still just as special for us as if they had been able to stay home. Even after my brother and I grew past the time of believing in Santa Claus, my family still practiced this custom.

This custom that was created out of necessity has stayed with me and influenced my family throughout the years. Now that I have a family of my own and my children no longer believe in Santa Claus, it is still very important to me to wait until Christmas morning for all of us to open our gifts from one another. I guess I still believe in Santa Claus just a tiny, little bit. I have noticed that my children who have children of their own are also following this custom of Santa Claus coming and presents being opened after midnight Christmas morning.

Good luck and have fun with your Family Customs journal entry!
