YEAST
Candida albicans, shown here in its yeast form as purple ovals, are eucaryotic cells and members of the Kingdom Fungi. As is typical of eucaryotic cells, these yeast are larger than procaryotic cells (bacteria). Yeast reproduce by budding, thus smaller "buds" may be seen protruding from the larger mother cell in some of these images. The bud eventually breaks off and becomes a separate cell. Candida albicans causes disease in humans more often than any other fungus, causing infections such as candidiasis, vaginitis and thrush. However, in over 15 percent of people Candida albicans lives harmlessly - kept in check by healthy immune systems.
