Offered a breakout session on integrating writing into the introductory curriculum. Participated on a panel discussion about integrating case studies into an introductory curriculum. Student Motivations and Attitudes: The Role of the Affective Domain in Geoscience Learning (2007). Learned about what affects student learning in an emotional aspect, developed methods for approaching controversial topics in my classroom, collaborated with colleagues to develop a model for student motivations specific to the geosciences.

- Lead guided geologic tours to small groups of non-scientists. Areas have included the Grand Canyon, McDowell Mountains, and Cave Creek.

Courses Taught: Physical Geology (the basic introductory geology class that covers rocks, plate tectonics, and environments of deposition); Historical Geology (reviews the basics from physical geology and focuses on the geologic history of Earth); Geologic Disasters and the Environment (reviews the basics from physical geology and focuses on different hazards both natural and human-derived that cause problems to ecosystems), Field Studies for Educators: Geologic Investigations of the Phoenix area (lead teachers to local areas of geologic interest, teach them the geology and provide them with activities they can use with their students).

Service Learning Instructor. Responsibilities included transporting students to Cesar Chavez Community School in South Phoenix, designing lesson plans, evaluating and mentoring future teachers (education majors), computer assessment, organizing field trips, evaluating and mentoring 3rd grade students, working with a diverse multilingual population, conflict resolution, working as a liaison between teachers and students, as well as administrators and teachers, and worked on funding sources for the program.

Responsibilities included creating a curriculum for gifted 12-14 year olds (taking a high school earth science class and condensing it into one month) with an emphasis on technology, computers, preparing and presenting material, organizing field trips, designing computer based problems and homework, evaluating students through exams, homework, quizzes, lab exercises and personal development, conducting parent/teacher meetings, and mentoring students for a future in science and academics.

Responsible for recruiting community college faculty to the GARNET program, continuing to conduct classroom observations using the RTOP. Collaboration with North Carolina State University, University of Colorado at Boulder, California State at Chico, University of North Dakota and Macalester College.

Consultant, Geoscience Affective NETwork (GARNET) CCLI Grant, Phase 1 (2007-2010). Trained to become proficient in RTOP observations (and established inter-rater reliability with a fellow observer). Observed introductory geology classrooms at University of North Dakota, University of Colorado at Boulder, California State at Chico, North Hennepin Community College, & Carleton College. Facilitator and consultant, Communication In Science Inquiry Project (CISIP), (2003-2009). Worked to develop professional development materials for middle school, high school, and community college teachers with a goal of greater science literacy. These professional development materials ask teachers to collaborate between English and science classrooms and provide strategies to create successful learning environments for all students, including English Language Learners. These materials have been developed with a collaborative group including science, English and ESL experts and evaluated for success by internal & external evaluators. Materials have been developed throughout the academic year, and implemented during professional development workshops in the summer and throughout the school year.

Faculty developed curriculum using a website developed by Dr. Poland. Workshop held at Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in Hawaii, July 2010.
