Life Masks, The Many Faces of HIV/AIDS, is a project that will create life
masks of over 1,000 people who are HIV-positive. In 1996 in the United States alone, 1,592
people contracted HIV every day. We are striving for the creation of 1,592 masks to
represent them. Included in that number will be 496 blank masks, mounted behind dark
plexiglass to symbolize the 496 people who died each week of AIDS in 1996.
There will be a catalog in which participants can be included. If they choose to
participate, they can have their name, photo and a brief statement about themselves.
The final installation will be a large spiral shaped wall that will have masks hanging
side by side on both sides. The walls of the spiral will be tallest at the outer ring
moving shorter towards the center. One will be able to see the entire exhibition when
standing in the center of the spiral.
The exhibit will travel continuously over a period of years. In November of 1998, the
exhibition will be on display at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona.
