An online course is a form of distance learning. Distance learning is a term used
to referred to courses that for the most part do not require students to go
on campus. Distance learning formats include correspondence, audio and video
tapes, CD-ROMS, and online courses offered over the internet.
Distance learning has become increasingly popular because of its convenience
and flexibility. Distance learners can engage in coursework on their own schedule
and convenience. A distance learning course covers the same material covered in
its corresponding traditional course.
Before enrolling in a distance learning online course, you must consider the question "Is
an online course for me?" Besides satisfying prerequisites, and having access to the
internet, you must consider your learning style, strengths, preferences, and self motivation.
To be successful, you must be able to follow written instructions in detail, be able to
express yourself concisely in writing, feel very comfortable using internet communication tools,
and most importantly be self-disciplined and self-motivated. In addition, students enrolled
in CIS159, CIS162AB, or CIS162AD will increase their
chances of success in their programming course if they have taken or worked with at least
one programming language. Your first programming course should NOT be taken online.
