Course Description: Overview of computer technology, concepts, terminology, and the role of computers in society. Discussion of social and ethical issues related to computers. Use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software. Includes programming and use of the Internet. Exploration of relevant emerging technologies.

Prerequisites: None, but this is a very fast paced and demanding course.

Optional Computer Courses: After reviewing the course competencies and schedule, students may feel CIS105 is not the appropriate course for them. Depending on their degree program, students may be able to choose either BPC100DD or BPC110. Students are allow to drop-add during the first week of school. Before dropping this course, make sure there is an open section of the other course you wish to take. For a comparison of the courses see www.mc.maricopa.edu/dept/d07/resources_which_course.html.

Transfer: CIS105 transfers to ASU as CIS105, CSE180 and EDT180 (ASU West), NAU as CIS120, and UA as MIS111.

Prereq Waiver: If you are only enrolled in this class to satisfy the prerequisite for another CIS course and you feel you have sufficient computing background, it is highly recommended that you see an MCC CIS full-time faculty member right away. The prerequisite may be waived with the permission of the instructor if they feel you have sufficient background and if CIS105 can be replaced with another course.

No Test Out Option: MCC does NOT offer a test out option for CIS105. Credit earned by examination is printed on the transcript and many universities will not accept the credit, including the in-state public universities. If CIS105 is required for your program of study, it is best to take it to ensure a smooth transfer. We may be able to offer an alternative course to CIS105 if you are working towards an MCC degree or certificate that will not necessarily be used to transfer. Please discuss your options with an MCC CIS full-time faculty member right away.
