Mitosis
Cell reproduction is called mitosis. Tissue growth, repair and/or replacement are factors that will stimulate mitosis to occur in cells. There are four stages or phases in mitosis, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase. Prophase and Telophase utilize the majority of time during this cellular cycle. Metaphase represents the shortest phase. Karyokinese (splitting of the nuclear components) occurs during Anaphase. Cytokinesis (splitting of the cytoplasmic components) occurs during Telophase. The cleavage furrow is visible during cytokinesis. Interphase represents the time the cell is not going through mitosis. This is when the cell is going through its normal cellular activity (i.e cellular respiration, protein synthesis, cellular growth, etc).
