Course DescriptionsIBS101 - Introduction to International Business (3 credits) This is intended to be the initial course for students entering the International Business Certificate. Students will be able to explain how economic, government, cultural, marketing, regional economic integration and financial issues affect international trade. IBS109 - Cultural Dimensions for International Trade (3 cr.) Students will be able to explain how cross-cultural factors, including face-saving, team decisions, non-verbal communication and language issues, geography, religion, history and politics impact business interactions in regions around the world. IBS116 - Import/Export Management (3 credits) Students will learn the steps involved in importing and exporting a product or service from beginning to end. Focus will be on documentation and procedures. They will be able to identify shipping methods and complete the documents required. They will also explain the role of freight forwarders and identify logical shipping routes, ports, intermodal transportation and distribution strategies. IBS118 - International Marketing Management (3 credits) The factors of product, price, promotion and distribution are applied to an international marketing setting. Students will: learn secondary research methods, identify potential markets, evaluate political and economic factors, and develop a marketing mix with strategies for promotion and distribution of products or services. IBS123 - U.S. Customs and Export Regulations (3 credit) Students will identify the documentation required by U.S. Customs, explain valuation procedures and tariff classification under the harmonized system. They will also identify special classification systems and foreign trade zones that reduce duties and how to obtain rulings under the Harmonized System. They will also know the U.S. Export laws as they apply to national security, foreign policy and domestic supply, prepare export license applications and complete required documentation for export clearance, including: shipper's export declaration and destination control statements, and identify the export commodity control number for specific products. IBS140 - International Financial Management (3 credits) Students will be able to describe the development of foreign exchange and international banking and the methods of export financing, as well as the methods used for export financing, including government loan programs. They will be able to explain the effect of exchange rates, and methods to hedge against financial risk. They will know the methods of structuring, negotiating and processing letters of credit; outline the financial documentation required and complete financial transactions, and complete financial documents--including letters of credit. IBS122 - International Internship (3 credits) Students will acquire a work situation that closely aligns with an international trade setting and write an analysis of that situation as it relates to the topics studied throughout the international business program.
