THE FOURTH WORLD: MEDICINE AND POISON

After the first sweat bath and the first hogan were completed, the people remembered that something was left down in the Third World. They contacted Water Monster and told him that a valuable medicine had been left behind in the world below. Water Monster plunged into the water to get the medicine and brought it up to the people in the Fourth World. The medicine turned out to be anit'iih (poison). Everyone asked for some of the medicine, and the people divided it among themselves. Tl'iish (Snake) held out his hand and asked for some. When he received his share he placed it in his mouth. Today the snake's bite still is fearful because he placed his share of the medicine in his mouth.
